At Brookhaven, the English curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully sequenced so that all students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to communicate effectively and engage meaningfully with the world around them.
English sits at the heart of the wider curriculum, enabling students to access learning across subjects, develop independence, and prepare for future education, employment and adult life.
Our intent is to ensure that every student becomes a confident reader, writer, speaker and listener through explicit teaching of vocabulary, reading fluency, comprehension, grammar, writing craft and spoken language. Students are exposed to a broad range of literature, non-fiction, functional texts and rich discussion opportunities, allowing them to build cultural capital, think critically, express ideas clearly and understand perspectives beyond their own experience.
Key Stage 3: a strong foundation
At Key Stage 3, our curriculum is underpinned by the principles of the Ark English Mastery curriculum and provides a strong foundation for future success. Learning is deliberately sequenced so that students acquire and revisit essential knowledge in reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and spoken language over time.
Through Literary Heritage, students encounter significant texts, writers and ideas that broaden their understanding of literature and the world. Through Mastery Writing, students are explicitly taught how sentences, grammar, structure and vocabulary choices shape meaning, enabling them to write with increasing accuracy, control and purpose. Reading is prioritised throughout Key Stage 3 so that students develop fluency, stamina, comprehension and confidence as readers.
The mastery approach
The Ark Mastery approach ensures that learning is cumulative and coherent. Key concepts, tier-two vocabulary and grammatical structures are revisited through regular retrieval, modelling and guided practice so that students can remember more, do more and apply their learning with increasing independence. The curriculum is adapted without lowering expectations: teachers use scaffolding, repetition, carefully chosen texts, questioning and explicit instruction to ensure that all our students can access ambitious content. This supports all students to develop the confidence and disciplinary knowledge needed to discuss texts, form interpretations, justify opinions and communicate ideas effectively.
By the end of Key Stage 3, students will have built the foundational knowledge and habits required to progress successfully into Key Stage 4. They will be able to read increasingly complex texts with understanding, use ambitious vocabulary accurately, write for different purposes and audiences, and speak with growing clarity and confidence. The intent of the Key Stage 3 curriculum is not only to prepare students for accreditation, but to develop learners who can use English to participate, question, explain, imagine and make sense of the world.
Key Stage 4: two pathways
At Key Stage 4, the curriculum builds deliberately on the knowledge, concepts and skills secured at Key Stage 3.
Students continue to develop as confident readers, writers, speakers and listeners while being prepared for appropriate accredited outcomes and meaningful next steps. Teaching revisits and deepens understanding of language techniques, text structures, literary concepts, inference, evaluation and vocabulary so that students can respond thoughtfully to fiction, non-fiction and functional texts. The curriculum remains ambitious and purposeful, ensuring that students understand the relevance of English to further education, employment, independence and adult life.
Castlebrook Pathway
An academically ambitious route towards GCSE English Language, with a strong focus on analytical reading, evaluative writing, creative expression and precise written communication.
Whittlebrook Pathway
The curriculum prioritises functional literacy, communication, independence and preparation for Entry Level or Functional Skills qualifications, ensuring that learning is accessible, relevant and closely linked to students' future aspirations.
Across both pathways, the curriculum is designed to remove barriers, maintain high expectations and enable every student to leave Key Stage 4 with improved literacy, greater confidence and the ability to use English meaningfully beyond school.
Our vision
Our curriculum intent is realised through high-quality teaching, careful adaptation and a clear focus on progression. We want students to know more, remember more and be able to do more in English as they move through the school.
Ultimately, our vision is that every student leaves Brookhaven with the language, literacy and confidence needed to succeed academically, socially and personally, and to take their next steps with independence and ambition.
