At Brookhaven School, we believe that Science helps young people to make sense of the world around them, understand their place within it, and develop the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in adult life.
Through an engaging, ambitious and inclusive curriculum, we aim to inspire curiosity, encourage questioning, and foster a lifelong interest in how the world works.
Exploring the world through Science
Science provides students with opportunities to explore the natural, physical and technological world through investigation, discussion and practical experiences. We want our students to develop an understanding of key scientific concepts alongside the confidence to apply their learning in real-life situations.
Our curriculum reflects our belief that Science should be accessible, relevant and meaningful for every learner.
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3, students follow an adapted National Curriculum which is carefully sequenced alongside the Brookhaven Steps Curriculum. This approach enables all students to access meaningful scientific learning from their individual starting points while developing essential communication, thinking and personal development skills.
Students build knowledge across Biology, Chemistry and Physics through engaging topics that encourage exploration, investigation and critical thinking. Practical learning experiences are embedded throughout the curriculum to develop curiosity, resilience and problem-solving skills while supporting students to make connections between scientific concepts and everyday life.
Key Stage 4
As students move into Key Stage 4, they progress onto one of Brookhaven's curriculum routes designed to meet their individual strengths, aspirations and future destinations.
Whittle Brook Route
Students following the Whittle Brook Route access a broad and engaging Science curriculum that combines academic learning with the development of independence and life skills. Students work towards the AQA ELC Science qualification (Entry Levels 1–3) and develop the scientific understanding required for everyday life, further learning and future employment opportunities. Learning emphasises practical application, problem-solving and the use of scientific knowledge in real-world contexts, enabling students to become confident, informed and independent young adults.
Castle Brook Route
Students following the Castle Brook Route access a more academically focused curriculum, studying up to five GCSE qualifications, including Combined Science. Learning is designed to challenge and inspire students while supporting them to achieve ambitious academic outcomes. Science learning is carefully aligned to individual EHCP outcomes, ensuring students develop both subject-specific knowledge and the wider skills needed to succeed in education and beyond.
Scientific enquiry
Across all routes, we place significant importance on developing scientific enquiry skills.
Students learn to observe, question, investigate, analyse evidence and draw conclusions. Through practical experiments and collaborative learning opportunities, students develop confidence, resilience and independence while learning how scientific knowledge is created and applied.
