At Brookhaven School, our Humanities curriculum aims to develop pupils' understanding of the world around them, their place within it, and the diverse histories, cultures, beliefs and environments that shape society.

Through the United Learning scheme of work, pupils access a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum that supports them to build secure subject knowledge across History, Geography and Religious Education. The curriculum is designed to be ambitious, inclusive and accessible, enabling all pupils to make progress from their individual starting points while developing curiosity, confidence and a deeper understanding of people, places and ideas.

History, Geography and Religious Education

Our intent is for pupils to gain powerful knowledge that helps them understand both Britain and the wider world.

History

Pupils explore significant people, events and periods so that they can develop a coherent sense of chronology, change, continuity, cause and consequence.

Geography

Pupils learn about physical and human processes, places, environments and global issues, helping them to understand how the world works and how people interact with it.

Religious Education and worldviews

Pupils are encouraged to explore different beliefs, values and traditions, developing respect, tolerance and an appreciation of diversity.

A carefully sequenced curriculum

The United Learning curriculum provides a clear and progressive structure, ensuring that learning is deliberately sequenced so pupils can revisit, connect and build upon prior knowledge over time. Key vocabulary, concepts and disciplinary skills are explicitly taught and revisited, supporting pupils to think, speak and write like historians, geographers and thoughtful citizens.

Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of our learners, by providing clear modelling, scaffolding, visual support, retrieval practice and opportunities for overlearning.

Humanities and personal development

We want pupils to become informed, reflective and empathetic young people.

Humanities at Brookhaven is also designed to support personal development. We want pupils to be able to ask questions, consider evidence, listen to different viewpoints and form reasoned opinions. The curriculum encourages pupils to make meaningful links between classroom learning and the wider world, including current affairs, local contexts and issues that affect communities nationally and globally.

Preparing pupils for life beyond school

Ultimately, our Humanities curriculum prepares pupils for life beyond school by developing knowledge, communication skills, critical thinking and cultural awareness.

We aim for pupils to leave Brookhaven with a stronger understanding of the past, the present and the world they are part of, alongside the confidence to engage positively with society and contribute as responsible citizens.
